EUCAP Somalia Maritime Law and Crime Workshop in Garowe

UCAP Somalia organised a Maritime Law and Crime Workshop for judges, prosecutors and police officers in Garowe, Puntland State of Somalia, on 17 and 19 September.

The aim of the workshop was to enhance the cooperation between judges, prosecutors and police, and to improve the knowledge of maritime security-related national and international legislation.

A total of 26 participants (four  women) joined the workshop, which was  conducted in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice, Religious Affairs and Rehabilitation (MoJRAR), UNSOM, UNDP, the Director of CID and Puntland State University.

The workshop included lectures on International and Somali Maritime Law, Human  Trafficking and Human Smuggling. Other elements  covered  were  cooperation between police and prosecution, introduction to Joint Maritime Information and Coordination  Centre (JMICC) and JMICC’s possibilities concerning  maritime pollution and Illegal,  Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, case studies on investigation and  prosecution of  maritime  crime, principles  of fair trail,  and EUCAP Somalia’s mandate and ongoing activities.
