BALADWEYNE – Heavy fighting broke out between Somali national army (SNA) forces and Al Shabaab fighters in west of Baladweyne town, some 335km north of Mogadishu.

The fighting flared up when militants armed with machine-guns and RPGs attacked on military base in El-Adde area, about 75km west of the town, killing at least soldiers.

In phone interview, areal chief, Jamal Aden Isaak said that the fighting killed at least soldiers, adding that the SNA forces repulsed Al Shabaab attack.

Reports suggest that the militants briefly took the control of the area, after the Somali forces backed by local armed militias were overpowered by the group’s fighters.

No word was available from the armed group of Al Shabaab over the clash in central Somalia’s Hiran region.
