MOGADISHU, Somalia ––Mareeg Online, a privately-owned independent website, is celebrating its 21st anniversary of existence since it made its maiden entry into the media sphere in Somalia.

Mareeg outlet first came to online on 16th May 2001 in the capital Mogadishu, with an intention to raise awareness as civil war was ongoing in Somalia just a few years after the central government had collapsed.

The outlet’s ceremony that was highly organized and decorated took place in the capital Mogadishu, with distinguished guests from the current government, civil society organizations and ordinary people were invited.

During the past 21 years, the outlet has been feeding both local and international communities with information about the wars, droughts, economy, environment, education and daily events in Somalia.

Abdullahi Ali Warsame, a senior editor and the co-founder of Mareeg Online, has congratulated the whole staff members and the readers at large on the occasion.

Warsame said Mareeg Online was launched to cater the much-needed information to the readers and give the Somali people a comprehensive picture of the political, cultural and economic state of their country.

“We wanted to raise awareness and let Somalis have the opportunity to express their freedom of speech on the important social and political issues in Somalia”, Warsame said.

He says the outlet would always be remembered for the tangible role it took in covering the severe droughts in southern Somalia in 2005.

The Mareeg Online is now based in Mogadishu, the Somali capital, and London, United Kingdom’s capital as well.
