MOGADISHU –(AGGM) Four government soldiers have been reportedly killed in an ambush attack launched by heavily armed Al Shabaab fighters near Bal’ad town, some 30km north of Mogadishu.
Somali-based group Al Shabaab claimed to have carried out a surprise attack on armored vehicle carrying military soldiers near Bal’ad town.
The group said on its website that its fighters clashed with the soldiers, while travelling near the town, killing at least four soldiers on board.
“The mujahedeen fighters launched an ambush assault against government soldiers. We have killed 4 of them, and some others escaped”, it said.
The group also said that its armed militants had seized a machine-gun and 3 AK-47s during the surprise attack.
Al-Shabab, which is fighting to overthrow the internationally recognized Somali government, has launched a series of deadly attacks in south and central of Somalia.
Somalia has been mired in civil war since 1991. It is also suffering from a regional drought that threatens to tip its population of 12 million into famine.
