MOGADISHU – Deadly bomb and gun attack targeted an army base runs by Somali security forces in the capital city of Mogadishu, killing several people dead.

Tuesday’s grenade bomb attack followed by heavy exchanges of gunfire was reported as gunmen assailed at army base in the city’s Aymiska neighborhood, witness said.

The clash, which lasted for 30 minutes, caused deaths and injuries of several people, according to a witness, who asked to be anonymous for reprisal attack on his life.

“I heard huge sound of twine explosions followed by gunfire between Somali security forces and unknown gunmen at Aymiska area in the capital”, he said.

The local authorities were unavailable to reach on the phone for comments on the attack in the capital city of Mogadishu.

No group says it has been behind for Tuesday’s assault.

But, such attacks are often carried out by Somali-based group Al Shabaab fighters battling against western-backed government.

The group’s fighters were driven out of Mogadishu in 2011 by Somali army troops backed by African Union peacekeepers in military offensives.
