BAIDOA –Mortar rounds rained down on Baidoa town, some 250km southwest of Somalia’s capital Mogadishu, witnesses said.
A barrage of mortar fire from Islamic extremists of Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab pummeled parts of the airport last night in the town, a witness said.
Reports of casualties and damage were not immediately available, security officials said.
No group says it carried out the bombing in the town of Baidoa.
But, Al-Shabaab, the Somali-based group with ties to al Qaeda, claimed responsibility for several attacks in the town over the past months.
The radical Islamist group, which controls parts of Somalia, has said it aims to turn the country into a fundamentalist Islamist state.
