Deadly rockets hit Somali army base near Kismayo

MOGADISHU, Somalia— Somali armed group Al Shabaab has launched mortar attack on military base near Kismayo town, some 500km south of Somali capital Mogadishu.

The group’s fighters fired several mortar rounds, with some them rained down on Jubaland military base in Sanguni area, some 50km north of Kismayo.

The attack killed at least six soldiers, who were at the base, according to source, who asked to be anonymous, because of reprisal attack.

Somali military officials remained unavailable to comment on the attack.

The attack comes a month after al Shabaab claimed to have killed 71 soldiers in massive attack started with suicide car bomb explosion at Sanguni army base near Kismayo.

The Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab has been battling the weak-western backed Mogadishu-based government for more than ten years in Somalia.
